TOU HI KOU KI
I am interested in the influences on these photos, taken over forty-two years. Originally I found exciting photos in the annuals of photography magazines. Some were works by 1950s Japanese collective, Vivo, particularly Eikoh Hosoe, as well as work by Kishin Shinoyama. They seemed to me to deal with issues of “order in chaos”. They were, and have remained, a part of my work.
But I’m not Japanese, and have mainly photographed in Australia, in the tropics. My “Japanese influenced” work is inevitably, immensely Australian. Even earlier influences, the paintings of Russell Drysdale and Sidney Nolan, leave cyclonic debris strewn throughout my pictures.
