Eve Arnold OBE Hon FRPS; April 21, 2026 – January 4, 2026

American-born Arnold spent most of her adult life living in Great Britain, when not traveling the world working on assignments for Magnum Photo Agency.

Arnold was noted for her intimate portraits of actress Marilyn Monroe, but also produced a large body of photo-journalist reportage images that subsequently were published as monographs on such cities and countries as Moscow, London, China, Afghanistan, South Africa and South America.

This is by no means an obituary for Eve Arnold, that has been better seen at Magnum or
The Guardian.

No, this is more one photographer’s cautionary tale about opportunity lost!

Arnold once said that “it is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument”… and in a period of naivety and enthusiasm, I missed the opportunity to meet one such photographer.

Let me explain – I have been a long time member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and in the early part of my career as an advertising photographer I was a member of the organising committee for a convention on the Gold Coast. One of my tasks was to escort noted New Zealand photo-journalist Brian Brake, to Brisbane airport. During the journey I mentioned that I was about to embark on a trip to Aberdeen in Scotland to document the performances of a Brisbane contemporary dance company and was worried about getting colour transparencies (you know, film before a digital age) processed prior to my return to Australia. As is the case with good photographers Brake was keen to share with me the name of his laboratory in London. Brake was also a member of the Magnum Photo Agency and as such had access to very good labs, so I was keen to make a note. He then also offered me the name of, in his words “a great photographer and a good friend of mine”!

Here is where the story sinks to a low ebb – at this time in my career I was self-taught (post graduate qualifications in visual arts came later), and I was faintly aware of the Magnum Photo Agency and totally unaware of Eve Arnold. I did use the services of the laboratory in London and did telephone Arnold. Brian Brake had written advising her that I would be in town and to expect my call. My telephone call to Arnold went something along the lines of – “thank you for offering me afternoon tea, but I’m a busy Brisbane photographer who has a lot to do in London, so if you don’t mind I don’t think I’ll find the time to visit ….” Yes, afternoon tea with a Living Treasure and One of the Greatest Photographers of the Twentieth Century!

Eve Arnold, thank you for your passion to document, your pursuit of the image… and for providing us– through your lens– some exquisite insights into our World.

Vale Eve Arnold.

Photographing Fireworks

As New Years Eve approaches, many of you are probably planning on heading out with your camera to capture the fireworks displays. Photographing fireworks is a really fun way to experiment with using longer shutter speeds and shooting at night.

Here’s a few tips to help you get better images if you are wanting to give it a try:

1. Remember your tripod!! This is the most important piece of equipment and the other thing to consider is to make sure you are standing on solid ground. Standing on a bridge or other form of suspended walkway could cause some camera shake as people move about.

2. Use a low ISO (100-200) setting to keep noise to a minimum and to allow a longer shutter speed without over exposing.

3. Use manual exposure if your camera allows it and use the bulb setting so you can keep the shutter open for as long as you like. Using a hat or piece of black card to stick in front of the lens in between the firework bursts will allow you to capture more bursts in a single exposure without overexposing.

4. Use a cable release so you can time the shots without having any camera shake. If you don’t have one, use the self timer but you won’t have as much control over the timing of the shot plus it will prevent you from using the Bulb setting so try experimenting with shutter speeds like 10,15, 20 and 30 seconds depending on the amount of fireworks.

5. Try apertures of around f8 - f16 to prevent the fireworks from overexposing against the dark sky.

6. A wide angle lens is generally best for capturing lots of bursts but it will depend on your location and how far away you are from the action.

7. Remember to use manual focus (set around infinity) to prevent the autofocus from hunting and to guarantee sharply focused images.

8. Remember to experiment and have fun!

Best of luck with your fireworks photos and let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Cam Attree

It’s Official!

Our company registration has been approved! We are now officially Foto Frenzy Pty Ltd. This is of course very exciting news for us as we can now start promoting ourselves through this website and our Facebook page.

If you haven’t already, please jump on our FB page and like us so you can easily stay up to date with our latest news. We also will be running a monthly photo comp through the FB page and the winner will receive a spot in one of our courses to the value of $395! Our first comp is themed “People” so make sure you submit your entry before January 22 to be in the running.

We are still currently trying to organise our premises which is taking a bit longer than we first thought. Hopefully we will have a base of operations soon but we may need to start with something a little smaller than we had first hoped.

Getting Closer

As we continue to develop our core courses and get all the structures in place our biggest job is now to organise our new premises. We are very excited about the prospect of having a dedicated lecture room, studio and a gallery space to create a real photographic hub of learning and sharing.

Of course we will make the big announcement of where our new Foto Frenzy Headquarters will be as soon as we have signed on the dotted line and we will then be working hard to get everything in place to make sure we can open asap. There will of course be a big opening party so stay tuned for the announcement!

Exciting Times Ahead

The last 48 hours has seen Foto Frenzy develop rapidly from a general concept that we have been discussing for a number of years into a fully formed business model with a commitment from all of us to fast track everything so we can be up and running by early next year. We are all very excited about the endless possibilities that Foto Frenzy presents to us and we can’t wait to start sharing our general photographic knowledge and overall love of photography with those of you who are brand new to photography as well as those with much more experience but who still have a burning desire to learn more and more.

We are currently very busy putting all the pieces into place to make sure we can provide the best photography course & workshop environment in Brisbane and we can’t wait to get started around February 2012.
